To God be the Glory

How often do we give God the credit He deserves? This writer can remember several occasions when he wishes he had given more credit and glory to God for good things that have happened or blessings that have been given. Perhaps sometimes we all need to be reminded that if we have any blessing, it has come from our unchanging, holy God, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). After all, it is by the grace of God that we are even here, and that the world still exists at all! (2 Peter 3:9-10; Acts 17:28). Jesus said that without Him we “can do nothing” (John 15:5); yet we know that through Him we “can do all things” (Philippians 4:13).
If we will keep a Biblical perspective on life, we will remember that we are here for the purpose of serving and obeying God (Ecclesiastes 12:13; Revelation 4:11). However, even if we serve God wholeheartedly and do many good works in His name, we are still just servants who have merely “done that which was our duty to do” (Luke 17:10). The Bible says that the purpose of our good works is not to glorify ourselves, but to glorify God, “let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Therefore, “He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 1:31;
2 Corinthians 10:17; Galatians 6:14).
