I Have Finished the Work

by Coy Hathcock

From The Reminder, December 12, 2010

Nearing the end of his earthly life, Jesus prayed to his Father.  In that prayer, Jesus said, “I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do” (John 17:4).  Jesus said He finished the work that God assigned.  Sure, there were more to heal, to feed, to teach, and to send, but Jesus was certain that He had completed His earthly mission.  And that He did.

Think about being so positioned with God that we could confidently say, as Jesus did, “Lord I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” Imagine ending every day, week, month and year saying what our Lord said.  Here’s how:

Align yourself with God—prioritize your life.  Make the main thing the main thing. “...seek first his kingdom and his righteousness…”  (Matthew 6:33).  What, in your life, would have to change for alignment to happen? What are your priorities?

Implement God’s work in your life—once the commitment to align yourself with God is made, carry out God’s work in a way that glorifies and honors him.  “...If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.  To him be the glory and the power forever and ever.  Amen” (1 Peter 4:11).  Does your daily life and influence draw people toward Jesus or steer them away?  In what ways do people see you bring honor to God?

Jesus, while on earth, completed perfectly God’s work.  He glorified God by doing the work his Father gave him.  While our walk with God will be marred with imperfections, it is well within our ability to prioritize our lives and as we work in His kingdom, bring glory to God.

What are your priorities?

Will you complete the work God has given you?

Is God being glorified in your life?
