Baptism and a New Car

by Travis L Quertermous

From The Daily Statesman, April 1, 2011

Suppose a local car dealership were to run this ad: “He who believes this ad and is baptized will receive a new car; but he who does not believe will receive nothing.” What would the person have to do to receive the new car? Obviously, he would need to believe and be baptized. Now read this statement on salvation from Jesus Christ: “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). Now, what must you do to be saved? Obviously, believe the gospel and be baptized (or immersed in water). Yet, there are those who deny that baptism is essential to salvation despite Jesus’ plain command to the contrary. Have you truly been saved?
