The Faith of our Fathers

February 15 was Presidents Day, a national holiday in honor of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Washington, our first President, was born on February 22. Lincoln, our 16^th President, was born on February 12. In Missouri, state law celebrates the birthdays of both men on the third Monday of February. Historians widely consider Washington and Lincoln to be our two greatest presidents ever. Both men considered themselves Christians and believed devoutly that the Bible was God’s word.

In his Farewell Address in 1796, Washington said, “It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible. Of all the dispositions and habits that lead to political prosperity, our religion and morality are the indispensable supporters.”

Of the Bible, Lincoln said, “In regard to this Great Book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Savior gave to the world was communicated through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong. All things most desirable for man's welfare, here and hereafter, are to be found portrayed in it.”

How different this attitude toward God, Jesus Christ, and the Bible is from too many politicians of our day! Too many of our elected officials and judges try to divorce our government and society from any vestiges of Christianity. The United States was founded upon Christian principles. Our decline as a nation is because we have largely abandoned those Biblical truths that made us great. May God give us more political leaders like Washington and Lincoln who understand these great truths.
