Text Box: The Gospel According to Jefferson
by Travis L. Quertermous

Thomas Jefferson is one of the most famous Americans in history. His face is on Mt. Rushmore, he was the author of the Declaration of Independence, a Founding Father, and our third president among many other noteworthy accomplishments. But despite his brilliance in other fields, Jefferson once did something that wasn’t very smart. He took it upon himself to publish his own version of the New Testament, with all the miracles of Jesus Christ edited out. Now Jefferson described himself as a Christian, so why would he do such a thing?
Copies of the Jefferson Bible are still in print. The dust jacket explains, “Jefferson was convinced that the authentic message of Jesus could be found only by extracting from the Gospels Jesus’ message of absolute love and service, rather than the miracle of the Annunciation, Virgin Birth, or even the Resurrection.” But no matter how noble Jefferson’s motives may have seemed to him, it was still a foolish thing to do because the miracles of Jesus are just as important to the gospel as the Sermon on the Mount.
In fact, Christianity is meaningless without the resurrection of Christ. The apostle Paul wrote, “And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins!” (1 Cor. 15:17). So the gospel according to Jefferson is worthless. Friends, I’ll stick with Jesus and Paul—what about you?

The Three Ages

It is made plain in the New Testament that the Law of Moses has been fulfilled.  It seems strange that so many people believe that this law is still in effect today.  Colossians 2:14-17 tells us that it was nailed to the cross with Christ.  The books of Romans, Galatians and Hebrews give scripture after scripture showing that the Law of Moses is no longer in force and that the law of the gospel of Christ - the New Testament -- is in effect today.  We are told in Galatians 5:4, “Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law: ye are fallen from grace.”

There are many religious organizations which try to hold on to parts of the old law in order to justify some practice in their churches - things such as instrumental music, special holy days, forbidding to marry, etc.  We must be careful when we study the Bible to realize that the Bible is divided into three separate ages.  The first is the Patriarchal Age.  In this age, God talked to the heads of families, such as Abraham.  This age lasted about 2500 years until the giving of the Law of Moses on Mt. Sinai.  The Mosaic Law was given exclusively to the Israelites and lasted about 1500 years and included the birth, life, and death of Jesus.  The third period is the Christian Age, which began with the establishment of the church of the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Christ and will last until the end of time.  We now live under this law.

Unless one understands these three periods of time, and the three laws that were given, and to whom these laws were given, it is very hard to get much understanding of the Bible.

Text Box: “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.”
				Matthew 5:17
Text Box: God is our plan A. We have no plan B.

This statement was made by a husband in reference to his wife’s aggressive brain cancer. The rest of the quote was: “We face the future with confidence in God’s goodness and care for us.” IS GOD YOUR ONE AND ONLY PLAN FOR LIFE? ARE YOU COMMITTING YOUR ALL TO HIM? “in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:6).

Text Box: Little Bobby was spending the week-end with his grandmother after a particularly trying week in kindergarten. His grandmother decided to take him to the park on Saturday morning. It had been snowing all night and everything was beautiful. His grandmother remarked, “Doesn’t it look like an artist painted the scenery? Did you know God painted this for you?” Bobby said, “Yes, God did it and He did it left-handed.” Confused, his grandmother asked, “What makes you say God did it left-handed?” “Well,” said Bobby, “We learned in Bible Class that Jesus sits on God’s right hand.”
