Text Box: What About Mixed Swimming?
by Travis L. Quertermous

When I was a boy, my grandmother used to preach against the evils of what she called “mixed bathing.” What she was referring to was men and women swimming together in public. The older generation called swimming “bathing.” Even today, swimsuits are still called “bathing suits” because of this.
As the weather gets hotter, swimming becomes more and more popular. Men and women head to the public swimming pool, the lake, the ocean, or a water park to cool off. Most never stop to ask themselves if God is pleased with such activity. We believe mixed swimming is wrong for two reasons. First, God requires us to wear modest, decent clothing in mixed company (1 Tim. 2:8-10; 1 Pet. 3:3-4). Now there is no way that any swimsuit today qualifies as modest or decent! It’s the equivalent of wearing your underwear in public! None of us with any shame would even dream of such—unless it’s at the pool or the beach.
Second, it places temptation before others of the opposite sex and it is always wrong to do so. Granted that one should not think such sinful thoughts, but that does not excuse those who put a stumbling block before others. One study of mixed swimming found that more than 60% of men and women agreed that men go to watch the women; that 30% of the women went to be watched; and that 59% of women agreed that their swimsuits were too revealing. Friends, that is not an activity Christians or their children need to be involved in.

Text Box: What I Want for Father’s Day
My son asked me what I wanted for Father’s Day. I appreciate his inquiry. I appreciate it because I know him and I know that he truly wants to honor me. I’ve given considerable thought to the matter. Here is a list of some of the things that I really want for Father’s Day. (I believe every father that is trying to live for Christ has this or a very similar want list.)
I want each of my children to know in the depth of their heart that I am glad to be their father. Daily I thank God for the privilege of being their father.
I want them to know that I value each of them highly and love each of them much. When all else is said and done, the embrace of their love makes life worthwhile.
I want them to know that I have tried, and am still trying, to be good to them as a father. No perfection is claimed, but my effort is real and from the heart.
I want them to know that I have only goodwill toward them and desire only good-will from them. Any counsel, any advice, every word spoken has been under control of this desire.
I want them to know that I have tried to be a good example for them, and if there be any place I have failed to be that for them, I beg their forgiveness. I am aware that the steps I take, the things I do, impact them--and I want it to be for good not ill.
I want them to know that their faith in Christ and their faithfulness to Christ is very important to me. I pray every day that the Lord will help me draw them and their mates and their children to Him. I want everyone to know the Lord and to live for him, and especially my children.
I want them to know the joy and love of family, beginning with mom and dad, and continuing in the embrace of their own children, and being extended to the love of the people of God. I want them to know that it is in loving one another that we honor others and God.
I want my children to know the joy of living for Christ, the contentment of a daily walk with God, the strength of character that God provides as they live for Him. I want them to know the reality of “pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God.”
I want my children to know the hope of heaven. I want them to know the compelling power of that hope, the reassuring nature of the hope. I want them to be able to instill that hope in their children, and each of us to be able to share that hope with one another.
This is what I desire for my children for each day, and as a father this is what I want for Father’s Day (Thanks for asking, Son.)
