Text Box: The Despair of Hopelessness
by Travis L. Quertermous

On November 11, we celebrated the 93rd anniversary of the end of World War I. In England, it is a national holiday called Armistice Day. Millions of people died in the First World War and the fighting on the Western Front was especially brutal. On the fields of northern France and Belgium the Allied and German armies confronted each other across a series of trenches. Life in the muddy, filthy, rat-infested trenches was very difficult for soldiers on both sides. Both armies bombarded each other continually with artillery and poison gas. Soldiers waited fearfully for the dreaded order to go “over the top” when they would charge into the no man’s land between the trenches into the enemy’s withering machine gun fire. For some it was seemingly just unbearable. Some soldiers died not from wounds or disease, but from a mysterious phenomenon called “trench death.” It seems they just lost the will to live and died of hopelessness.
To live without hope is a terrible thing and causes many people to take their own lives. Even the most spiritual of people can feel hopeless at times. When David was on the run from the jealous and vengeful King Saul, he wrote Psalm 142 while hiding in a cave. In verse four, he lamented, “Look on my right hand and see, For there is no one who acknowledges me; Refuge has failed me; No one cares for my soul.” Of course, David then realized that God loved him. In fact, He loved us all so much He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins. In Christ, we have the hope of eternal life. Do you have this hope today?

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.”

The Old Paths

“Thus says the Lord: Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.  But they said, We will not walk in it”  (Jeremiah 6:16).

A good preaching text, often used! I like the ESV translation, “ancient paths.”  Jeremiah’s paths were the ways of the law of Moses.

The paths that some would call us to take as our model for today are not “old” enough.  The ways of the 1940’s and 50’s are not our standard.  Neither are the paths discovered and trod by the Stones and Campbells.  We are not called to restore the 19th century restoration movement.

What we should restore is the church as Jesus and the apostles were calling it in the Scriptures to be.

Only paths as ancient as the New Testament are old enough to require that we walk therein.

Text Box: TALKING GOATS

My three-year-old son, Grant, told me he learned a new song in children’s church about goats on the mountain when Jesus was born. I hadn’t heard that one before, so I asked him to sing it. He began, “Goats tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere. Goats tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.”
