Text Box: “Judge Not, That You Be Not Judged”
by Travis L. Quertermous

If there is one verse of Scripture our politically correct society knows, it is Jesus’ statement in Matthew 7:1, “Judge not, that you be not judged.” In a world where the cardinal sin seems to be judging another, this verse is often misapplied to teach that it is always wrong to judge someone else’s beliefs. But it does not take the wisdom of Solomon to see that such a view is self-contradictory for such a person has judged that we should never judge!
If one reads the rest of the context in Matthew 7:2-5, it is easy to see that Jesus is not condemning all judging, but hypocritical judging. In Matthew 7:5, Christ said, “Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother’s eye.” One engaged in the sin of adultery, for example, cannot rightly judge another adulterer (cf. Romans 2:21-24).
The Lord also said, “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment” (John 7:24). That is, we should not make superficial judgments, but we should only judge after checking all the relevant facts and then, only according to God’s word. Let us be sure we practice Biblical judging!

Text Box: Some Things We Must Get
Right In Worship

The right object: Jesus said to the devil, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve” (Matt. 4:10). The devil is not to be worshipped. The verse that Jesus quoted originally applied and forbade the worship of idols. Images made by men, false gods, are not to be worshipped (Exo. 20:4-5). Men, even kings and emperors are not to be worshipped (Acts 12:21-23). Angels refuse worship and Paul forbade the practice writing, “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind” (Col.2:18). Only God is worthy of our worship.
The right actions: In a discussion about worship with the Samaritan woman, Jesus said, “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him” (John 4:23). If God had simply commanded our worship without telling us how to worship, then we could decide for ourselves. However, New Testament precept and the example of the early church instruct us to worship God in singing, praying, studying, giving and observing the Lord’s Supper. The New Testament does not teach us to worship by clapping, playing an instrument, doing a dance, or charming snakes - or any other human innovation.
The right disposition: The very nature of worship requires the worshipper’s heart to be in the right place. A grudge in my heart toward a brother can ruin my heart for worship (Matt. 5:23-24). Bitterness toward one’s spouse can hinder worship (1 Per. 3:7). Some of the brethren at Corinth had turned the Lord’s Supper into an eating and drinking contest and in the process ate and drank damnation to themselves (1 Cor. 11:29). It is so important, therefore, for worshippers to prepare their hearts, to exercise mental self discipline and with pure hearts remain as focused as possible in offering true worship in the right spirit to God.
