Long Live The King!

by Travis L. Quertermous

Millions of fans around the world mourned the death of Elvis Presley, “the king of rock ‘n roll,” this past Thursday, August 17.  Hundreds of fans gathered at Graceland, Elvis’s home in Memphis, TN, to celebrate the life of “the King.” Elvis was found dead in his home on August 17, 1977. He had died of a drug overdose. It has since been learned that Elvis had been abusing prescription drugs for years. He was only 42 years old when he died.

Despite the desperate wishes of many fans to the contrary, Elvis really is dead. Rumors of his having faked his death are just that, rumors that have grown into an urban legend. Near our old home in Warrenton, MO, in a little town called Wright City, there is an “Elvis Is Alive” museum. Such is just wishful thinking.

But the true “King of Kings” (Rev. 19:16), Jesus Christ, is not dead. Certainly, His enemies put him to death, but He did not stay in His grave. Sixty years after His resurrection, Jesus said to the apostle John, “I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death” (Rev. 1:18).

Every Sunday, we commemorate the Lord’s death through the Lord’s supper and we proclaim our faith in a risen Savior who is coming back one day to take the saved to heaven (1 Cor. 11:23-26; Acts 20:6-7). Because Jesus conquered death, we have the hope of eternal life through the power of His death and resurrection. Have you obeyed the gospel that these blessings might be yours?

The “king” is dead! Long live the King!
